More on BPA

In July, I wrote a blog on TownHall.com about Bisphenol A (BPA) in which I brought to your attention the behavior of many major media outlets with regard to their accusations against BPA, which is a chemical used to make lightweight, versatile, durable, high-performance plastics. In that piece I identified that contrary to those that claim that BPA is dangerous and hazardous to all, new research was telling an opposite story: … After years of hand-wringing, biased media reports and witch hunts about BPA -- a new Statistical Assessment Service (STATS) report out of George Mason University (a non profit, non partisan group) has found that the risks were misleading and caused unnecessary public anxiety. As the report noted, "A handful of scientists and environmental activist groups claim that bisphenol A is the biological equivalent of global warming, and its presence in plastic bottles and can linings is endangering “millions of babies.” Their message – and their accusation that the Food and Drug Administration has been swayed by industry-sponsored studies and has ignored vital scientific evidence – has led Congress to ask the agency to re-examine the safety of the chemical. A decision is expected by the end of the summer." ... Of course, if someone claims your product harms babies, they don't really need to prove it. The accusation is so incendiary that the mere suggestion could bankrupt most companies -- which, of course, is the point if you are trying to sell a "safer" plastic product. In short, it's a "scare racket"… And yet, many popular media outlets continue to baselessly attack BPA as a dangerous and unsafe chemical.

UK Climate Expert Warns Against Copenhagen Treaty, Global Warming Sham

President Obama and other world leaders are gearing up to meet in Copenhagen next month to discuss global policies to fight global warming climate change. However, British climate expert and former advisor to Margaret Thatcher Lord Christopher Monckton--the man who reportedly was denied an opportunity to provide congressional testimony contrary to Al Gore's--is giving the United States a stern warning about the implications a global climate treaty could have on the country.
Last month, Monckton spoke at a conference held at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minnesota. The conference previewed a newly released 22-minute documentary entitled Climate Chains, a contrary viewpoint to Gore's notorious Inconvenient Truth:

California should be CARB FREE!

The California Air Resources Board or CARB, according to the Washington Times, is threatening to require all cars and light trucks sold in California after 2012 to feature metallic reflective window glazing (i.e. tints) to keep interiors cool and thus use less air condition.
No, I am NOT JOKING! There so many reasons why this is wrong on so many different levels, OTHER THAN just more Government intrustion into your lives, such as:
The problem is that the new windows would reflect radio waves, thus highly compromising the use of GPS units, garage-door openers, laptop computers, satellite radio systems, parolee ankle bracelets, wireless medical equipment and cell phones. The problem is that the new windows would reflect radio waves, thus highly compromising the use of GPS units, garage-door openers, laptop computers, satellite radio systems, parolee ankle bracelets, wireless medical equipment and cell phones.
The new windows would add about $250 to the cost of each vehicle. Cars with sunroofs, and perhaps convertibles, probably would not comply and thus could effectively be outlawed. Drivers trapped in their cars after accidents couldn't call 911.The new windows would add about $250 to the cost of each vehicle. Liberals fail to see the broad picture and just think Government is the solution to all - affectively killing the free market. Hmm, perhaps the Obama Administration can call these "saved jobs" since there is no way to justify that to begin with.

Energy: A Top Priority for Obama, But Not for Voters
|

The White House homepage today highlights the Obama administration's dedication to "lead the global economy in clean energy." Congress is eagerly awaiting the end of the health care debate so it can take up the Democrats' cap-and-trade plan. But the latest word from the American people is that energy policy is dead last on their priority list these days.
A recent poll from USA Today shows that even when Barack Obama was elected president last November, only 6% of Americans thought energy should be his top priority. Now, a year later, even fewer think this policy warrents the White House's full attention. Only 2% of Americans now think the President's top priority should be energy, well-behind other top concerns like the economy, Iraq and Afghanistan, health care and the federal budget deficit.
With this insight, why is the Obama administration continuing to pursue its cap-and-trade policy as if it were a top priority? And since the nation's economy and budget deficits are so high on Americans' priority lists, why would the administration pursue cap-and-trade knowing that it would have significant negative impacts on business' bottom lines, homeowners' pocketbooks and the nation's economy as a whole?
PS--Why is the White House website reporting that the stimulus plan has "created or saved" jobs for "over one million people" when its own Recovery.gov is only reporting 640,000?

CRS: American Energy Resources Greatest in the World

A new report from the Congressional Research Service shows that the U.S. has a larger supply of energy resources than any other nation on earth. It's just too bad our own government won't let us use them, huh?
The report states that the U.S. has tapped into only 13% of our total resources, leaving the other 87% untouched. Astonishingly, the U.S. has 1,321 billion barrels of oil--or barrels of oil equivalent for other energy sources--when combining recoverable natural gas, oil and coal resources.
Human Events has made the following chart to show the "true picture of America's energy reserves":
Would it be so bad if we used some of these resources in waning ourselves off of imported energy sources? Al Gore could even simultaneously work to construct newer, renewable sources if he wanted to; at least we'd stop sending billions of dollars overseas every year...
Working to tap America's own energy supply = actual shovel-ready jobs.
Update: Speaking of Al Gore, check out the UK's Telegraph which reports on how Gore has been cashing-in on his own global warming hysteria. The headline: Al Gore Could Be World's First Carbon Billionaire.
Mr. Gore of course says he's putting his "money where my mouth is." But is it any coincidence that last year, Gore put $56 million in a company that's now receiving hundreds of millions of dollars in government contracts granted by the Obama administration's Energy Department? Even the NYTimes is wondering...

Goracle Praises China, Blasts America, & Refutes Hypocrisy Charges

The Goracle is continuing to prophecy in the name of global warming climate change. This morning he appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" to testify. Joe Scarborough remarked that Gore has "the fervor of an Evangelical." I agree. What Joe failed to mention was Gore's faith and religion; both owned and controlled by his goddess: Mother Nature.
Gore's global warming mega church has been filled by the national media since the genesis of his testimony. Newsweek just put him on the cover of their latest issue and characterized him as an "Eco-Prophet," in bold white letters.
Here are the highlights from Gore's 13-plus minute interview:

Pain at the Pump: Gas Prices on the Rise Reflect Decline in US Dollar

Have you noticed a spike in your local gas prices lately? According to AAA, the average price of unleaded gasoline in Chicago "spiked 26 cents a gallon from a month ago to $2.85 and jumped 17 cents from a week ago... Prices are advancing toward the year-ago level of $3.05 a gallon."
Meanwhile, the national average for gas prices hit $2.67 yesterday, after rising for the 13th straight day.
So what gives? PFGBest analyst Phil Flynn says blame the decreasing value of the dollar for rising gas prices:
[W]eakness in the U.S. dollar has driven the price of oil far beyond what normal supply and demand fundamentals typically bear. "The increase was driven not so much by demand but by declining gas production and a weakening dollar," Flynn said. "Things are out of whack as refiners have scaled back production to historic lows as their margins get squeezed."

Obama "Smart Energy" Plan Not Very Bright
|

President Obama visited the small town of Arcadia, Florida yesterday--total population of 6,671--to show off a new solar energy facility built with the help of his stimulus package. Sounds innocent enough, but as with most everything else this administration does, you have to look beyond the White House photo ops...
The president visited DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy center--supposedly the biggest solar photovoltaic center in the country. The company's 90,500 solar panels generate about 42,000 megawatt hours of power/year. Wow--impressed yet?
Too bad the facility--which cost $150 million to build--only provides power to 3,000 homes. This amounts to taxpayers spending $50,000 for EACH home receiving power from this one facility.
Who in their right mind thinks this is a good plan? Apparently Obama does. During his visit, he noted:
There are those who are also going to suggest that moving toward a clean energy future is going to somehow harm the economy or lead to fewer jobs. And they're going to argue that we should do nothing, stand pat, do less or delay action yet again. I just want to point out, we've heard such arguments before. We've engaged in this same type of debate a lot of times through our history. People don't like change, and they get nervous about it.
Uh, it's not that I don't like "change"; I just don't like wasting money. But I guess the president has no problem with that: $150 million down, billions to go...

The Obama Administration's Assault on Coal Industry
|
|
Posted by:

As Congress considers cap-and-trade legislation--an idea that then-candidate Obama promised would bankrupt the coal industry--the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has already started waging war on the industry, putting the brakes on mining in certain coal-producing states.
The Washington Times' Amanda Carpenter reports:
While campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination, Barack Obama said his cap-and-trade tax plans would “bankrupt” anyone building a coal-fired power plant. Although those taxes haven’t materialized, the Environmental Protection Agency has put the brakes on 79 surface mining permits in four states since he was elected. The EPA says these permits could violate the Clean Water Act and warrant “enhanced” review. But the agency went even further last week, announcing plans to revoke a permit for the Spruce No. 1 Mine in West Virginia – a move that has caused anxiety among coal-state Democrats about the future of the industry under the Obama administration. … Although his favored cap-and-trade bill hasn’t yet been passed, West Virginia’s Democratic Gov. Joe Manchin III, who supported Mr. Obama’s candidacy, called the EPA moves part of a stealth campaign to stifle the industry. “Right now, my belief is that they’re trying to kill off surface mining through regulation what they cannot get done through legislation,” Mr. Manchin told MetroNews Talkline, a West Virginia call-in radio program, earlier this month. In West Virginia, 23 permits are being held up, with other affected states being Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.
Among the coal states' representatives voicing opposition to the move is West Virginia Senator Jay Rockefeller: “I am angry with the EPA’s announcement that they will use veto power to revoke the authorized Spruce Mine permit in Logan,” he said. “It is wrong and unfair for the EPA to change the rules for a permit that is already active.” Perhaps Rockefeller (and Gov. Manchin) should've thought about the ramifications these horrible"environmental" policies would have on his state BEFORE supporting Obama during the presidential campaign. And I guess the jobs of coal plant workers won't be among those "saved or created" by the Obama administration in the near future...
In addition, are Rockefeller and other Senators from these coal-producing states worried enough about their constituents and the energy market to oppose the president's cap-and-trade policy? Somehow I doubt it.

Call Me a CARB Berater

Just what is it about California and its government’s increasingly creative ways of screwing up stuff? The latest example comes from the California Air Resources Board, aka CARB, the state’s evil twin of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Seems CARB wants to have all carmakers glaze car windows with tiny flecks of metal oxide.
Stay with me here.
This metal oxide is designed to reflect sunlight, which makes cars a little cooler in the summertime which means people don’t have to use their car air conditioners as much which means they won’t burn as much gas driving which means less pollution which means the Earth won’t fry under the withering heat that is Global Warming.
Still with me?
Trouble is this metal oxide window glazing reflects more than just sunshine and heat. It also reflects radio waves. You know, like the radio waves that provide data to your GPS unit, your cell phone, your Sirius or XM radio, your laptop, your garage door opener and, for you recently released prison inmates, your parolee ankle bracelet.
Toyota actually tried this in the late 1980s in Japan but the free market decided they would rather let the sun shine in than do without their radio gadgets so the automaker dumped the metal oxide window glazing. Instead of heat reflecting window glazing, people who have a dog in this fight are suggesting CARB look at heat absorbing window treatments instead because people can still feelgood about saving the planet while listening to the 80s Channel and their Nuvi to find the office of a prospective client for their next appointment. Makes sense, right? Not to CARB. I wish I was the first to berate CARB for this wackiness but Rush Limbaugh beat me to it with this scorching critique of the idea.

NBC Anchor: Drop in Warming Credence Because People Are "Less Sensitive to Environment"
|

Today's report released from Pew Research suggests that the number of Americans buying into the hoopla of global warming has sharply declined over the past year. But as NBC News anchor Brian Williams reports, it's not because people don't believe in global warming, but that "in a down economy, people are less sensitive to the environment."
Evidence tonight that a major opinion poll has picked up on a major change on a big issue. For the past three years, over 70 percent of Americans have told pollsters from the Pew Research organization they believe there's solid evidence of global warming. This year, however, that number has dropped off significantly. Now just 57 percent say they believe it. The number of people who say they don't believe in climate change at all has doubled in that time. One theory offered today: in a down economy, people are less sensitive to the environment.
Too bad they don't mention that the "one theory offered today" is being offered by NBC execs.
Still, this might be a fair assumption to make--obviously the economy is #1 in peoples' minds these days, and understandably so. But isn't it slightly possible that there are other factors at work here that have people doubting Al Gore's hysteria?
As NewsBusters rightly points out, couldn't the fact the BBC recently reported that "for the last 11 years we have not observed any increase in global temperatures" have an impact on peoples' perception of "global warming"?
Or maybe people who responded to the Pew poll caught last weekend's Washington Post report:
Something happened in Washington on Friday that had not occurred in 138 years of weather history: For the first time since the National Weather Service began compiling daily data here, the high temperature for Oct. 16 was below 50 degrees.
Couldn't any of these little bits of info contrary to the theory that exist out there put at least a little doubt in someone's mind about global warming? Apparently NBC doesn't think so.

Poor Al Gore: Americans Not Convinced by Doomsday Global Warming Rhetoric
|

New survey results out today from Pew Research are bad news for President Obama and other global warming activists hoping to impose a cap-and-trade policy to control carbon emissions. According to the survey, there has been a "sharp decline" over the last year in Americans who subscribe to the theory of global warming:
The latest national survey by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press, conducted Sept. 30-Oct. 4 among 1,500 adults reached on cell phones and landlines, finds that 57% think there is solid evidence that the average temperature on earth has been getting warmer over the past few decades. In April 2008, 71% said there was solid evidence of rising global temperatures. Over the same period, there has been a comparable decline in the proportion of Americans who say global temperatures are rising as a result of human activity, such as burning fossil fuels. Just 36% say that currently, down from 47% last year.
Pew says that the political ramifications have been specifically significant among Independents:
Just 53% of independents now see solid evidence of global warming, compared with 75% who did so in April 2008. Republicans, who already were highly skeptical of the evidence of global warming, have become even more so: just 35% of Republicans now see solid evidence of rising global temperatures, down from 49% in 2008 and 62% in 2007. Fewer Democrats also express this view – 75% today compared with 83% last year.
With all this growing skepticism about global warming, you'd think support for cap-and-trade would drop. Not on Capitol Hill!
