"That Kind of Shuts You Up, Doesn't It?" |

I have finally gotten around to reading "When Michelle Met Barack," a glowing little piece in The Washington Post. Obviously intended as a puff piece, it nevertheless offers some insight into the personalities of the people who are obviously hoping to be our next President and First Lady.
First, about Barack:
Near the end of the piece, its author discusses the conflict the Obamas had over whether to get married. Michelle hoped to get married; Barack "put her off, arguing that marriage was a meaningless institution and that the only thing that mattered was how they felt about each other." Apparently, one night at a fancy Chicago restaurant, Barack "went into his usual tirade against marriage, a dissertation that went on until they ordered dessert."
At that point, he took out a box with a ring, and said to his wife, "This kind of shuts you up, doesn't it?"
Don't get me wrong. That kind of talk doesn't disqualify someone from being President. But it sure isn't the honeyed speech we've all grown to know and love in recent months, is it? Barack's outspoken antipathy to marriage sounds like it's been infused with "anti-institutional," radical ideology, more than reflecting a frequent male hesitation about commitment, doesn't it? Is this how he talks and feels when he's off-camera?
Second, about Michelle
I have worked as an associate in a big law firm, and the work can be tedious and the hours, long. Michelle Obama's reaction to those facts of life strike me as bizarre. She was, apparently, recruited by the glitziest, most interesting department at the big, prestigious law firm Sidley Austin, but even that wasn't enough. According to the piece:
Quincy White, the partner who helped recruit Michelle and who headed the marketing group, remembers finding her a challenge to manage. White, who is now retired from the firm, says he gave her the most interesting work he could find, in part because he wanted to see her advance, but also because she seemed perennially dissatisfied. . . .
[The work was] [t]oo monotonous for Michelle, who, White says, complained that the work he gave her was unsatisfactory. He says he gave her the Coors beer ads, which he considered one of the more glamorous assignments they had. Even then, he says, "she at one point went over my head and complained [to human resources] that I wasn't giving her enough interesting stuff . . ."
For anyone who hasn't worked as a law firm associate, it's hard to overstate just how outrageously aggressive such a move is. To complain about a partner, one who heads a department, no less -- to try to cause him a problem -- because your work isn't "interesting" enough? Are you kidding?
Wow. What a piece of work. Good luck to Mrs. Obama's staff . . . that's gotta be a hardship post.

A Word to Catholic Democrats |

The prefect of the Vatican’s Supreme Court of the Apostolic Signature -- the Vatican's highest court -- has said that the Democrat Party risks "transforming itself definitively into a party of death. . ." because of its stance on abortion and bioethical issues.
I've heard some on the left dismiss such comments in the past because they're from Vatican denizens who seem to have little familiarity with modern American life. But this one comes from the former Archbishop Raymond Burke of St. Louis, himself an American.
It's hard to figure out how Catholics can ignore such warnings and still remain Catholics in good standing, isn't it?

Just received an email informing me that Squidoo is giving away $80,000 to charity and is taking a vote on where the money should go. You can vote here.
Choices range from left (People for the American Way, Children's Defense Fund e.g.) to some of my favorites, including the Salvation Army, Soldiers' Angels, and Critter Connection.
Check it out.
Update: Jim Geraghty's already on it over at NRO (and has put in a good word for Soldier's Angels).

Barack ISO Rape Victim |
|

Apparently, Barack Obama's campaign went in search of a rape victim to appear in a campaign ad. Classy. One presumes the ad would have focused on abortion rights, and how rape victims are counting on Democrats like Barack's to preserve their "choice." But note, first, that John McCain has included rape as an exception to his overall pro-life stance (and this simple fact makes him much more centrist in his abortion views than Barack is in his).
Second, even as the Obama campaign seeks a rape victim to exploit in an ad, keep in mind that all the infants who were aborted, in accordance with Barack's extreme pro-choice views, aren't available for comment.
Because they're dead.

Obama Attacks Abortion Survivor |
|

With this ad, Gianna Jessen launched a broadside against Barack Obama's repeated opposition to the Born Alive Infant Protection Act in Illinois (my column laying out the whole sordid history is here). It's not surprising she'd object to his stance -- Jessen herself is the survivor of a botched abortion attempt.
Barack's ad attacking Jessen (and inaccurately blaming John McCain for the ad) is here. He argues that his votes against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act are being "taken out of context."
But here's the tip of the iceberg, quick and easy: After the US Senate passed a bill protecting babies born alive as a result of botched abortions -- with even people like Barbara Boxer and Teddy Kennedy voting in support -- the same bill went back to Barack's committee in the Illinois Senate. He voted against it.
The wording was identical. Here's the side-by-side comparison of the federal and Illinois bills. See for yourself.
And then decide whether Barack's attacks on abortion survivor Gianna Jessen have merit.

What Would We Do Without Polls? |

Another Dumb, Useless Poll:
If this election were about which candidate people wanted as their child's schoolteacher, Barack Obama would be moving to the head of the class. They'd also rather watch a football game with him, but only by inches.
People picked the Democrat over Republican John McCain to catch a game with by 50 percent to 47 percent, according to an Associated Press-Yahoo News poll released Friday. Asked which they'd choose to be their child's teacher, Obama was the choice by a more decisive 55 percent to 44 percent, including a markedly stronger performance by the Illinois senator among whites.

This ad from BornAliveTruth.org features moving testimony from a woman who was born alive 31 years ago after a "botched" abortion. Keep in mind that, had Barack's point of view carried the day, little babies like she once was could be left to die without a second thought.

Responding To "An Army Of Sarahs" |

My column, "An Army of Sarahs," has triggered quite few moving e-mails, none more so than this one:
Hugh
I want to tell you why your column touched me, and one reason why I both support Sarah Palin and positively detest those who use Trig against her.
About 35 years ago, a very scared young woman gave birth to a profoundly birth-defective child. He had hydrocepahic problems and doctors said he couldn't hope to live more than six weeks.

A Day of Dedication |

A 9/11 memorial has gone up at the Pentagon.
On this day, we remember with prayers all those lost in the attacks of 9/11, and with gratitude the brave people who brought down the plane in Pennsylvania, showing the world what Americans are made of.
Though it's a day for sorrow, as we remember, it's also a day for resolve. Let's never forget what happened, and the price so many paid for our having let down our vigilance and our guard, ignoring and underestimating our adversaries in the world.
And as Ronald Reagan said, let us always be prepared, so that we may always be free.
