Public Option: Frank Admits What Obama Will Not

On June 15, Barack Obama told the American people the following regarding his proposed health care plan:
What are not legitimate concerns are those being put forward claiming a public option is somehow a Trojan horse for a single-payer system. … So, when you hear the naysayers claim that I’m trying to bring about government-run health care, know this - they are not telling the truth.
Meanwhile, his allies in Congress are telling a completely different story. Democratic Congressman Barney Frank (Mass.) had the following exchange when questioned by a group named Single Payer Action:
Single Payer Action: "Why shouldn't we start with single payer now?"
Congressman Frank: "Because we don’t have the votes for it. I wish we did. I think that if we get a good public option it could lead to single payer and that is the best way to reach single payer. Saying you’ll do nothing till you get single payer is a sure way never to get it. … I think the best way we’re going to get single payer, the only way, is to have a public option and demonstrate the strength of its power." (video available here)
Hmm. I didn't think I'd ever say this, but I think Barney Frank is right! Either Obama doesn't understand basic economic principle, or he's the one lying to the American people.
As Fox News would say: we report, you decide.

The One Big Question on Health Reform
|
|

Any American who’s ever bought insurance will be able to answer the key question about health care reform. What happens to your insurance premiums when the benefits go up—way up? Will you pay more if you suddenly move from a bare-bones, high deductible policy to a new gold-plated policy that covers everything?
This is a key question because the Obama reforms call not only for a new government-sponsored health plan, but also for new regulations on existing policies—requiring that they remove benefit caps, lower deductibles and co-pays, and insure (at no extra cost) even those with dire, pre-existing conditions.
Aside from the huge tax burden to support the government program, crushing new rules on private insurance will force premiums sky high—striking hard at both employers and individuals, and starkly limiting their choices.

Extra Funding for Clunkers Faces Roadblocks in Senate

As the House voted quickly today to funnel an additional $2 billion of stimulus money into the stalled Cash for Clunkers program, Sen. John McCain said he will oppose any Senate move to consider the House bill--perhaps even a filibuster. He noted earlier today, "I not only wouldn't vote for the extra two billion, I was opposed to the initial billion... We're now again bailing out the automobile corporations, two of which we own."
In addition, Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein (CA), who introduced her own plans for a similar CfC program in January, released a joint statement with fellow Sen. Susan Collins (ME) last night, stating:
We will insist than any extension of the program requires that the minimum fuel economy improvement for newly purchased vehicles be at least two miles per gallon higher than it is under the enacted Clunkers program. It is also important to include lower-income consumers who are disadvantaged under the current program. So, we would also include a voucher for the purchase of fuel efficient used vehicles.
In addition to these bipartisan roadblocks for extra CfC funding, the Senate is approaching the August recess and still has to debate and vote on the confirmation of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

USA Today ran an op-ed yesterday from Former Mass. Governor Mitt Romney. In it, Romney encourages President Obama not to rush health care reform efforts, and that he should listen to differing views, including some from icky Republicans!

Brought to you by the makers of Flunked, the Evergreen Freedom Foundation Production's Skooled is a weekly web a series of candid discussions on some controversial issues in education by a controversial player in that field. Dr. Ben Chavis is the founder of the American Indian Public Charter Schools in Oakland, CA. Now, we are pleased to introduce Skooled by Dr. Ben—a series of weekly web shorts featuring Dr. Ben Chavis, founder of the American Indian Charter Schools in Oakland, CA and one of the “All-Stars” in Flunked.
His methods are unorthodox. His language is candid. He has no fear, and while much of the rest of the education world is wringing its hands, Dr. Ben is getting it done. In some of the toughest areas, with some of the most at-risk students. Always colorful—and usually controversial—these two- to three-minute web shorts feature Dr. Chavis telling the stories of how he turned one of the worst schools in Oakland into one of the top schools in the state!"

House Moves to Try & Save Broken Down Clunkers Program
|

Updated: The House today passed a bill to redirect $2 billion from reserved stimulus dollars to help fund the broken down "cash for clunkers" program. As we mentioned earlier, the program burned through about $1 billion during its first six days. So, these new House efforts should help to extend the program by... a couple of weeks.
What happens after that? No one seems to know or care. Since the auto industry is already in the red, why not divert some more tax dollars away from people who own cars that get more than 18 mpg to people who own one that gets, say, 16 mpg.
Michael Barone of the Washington Examiner notes that this scheme is nothing new. In fact, Arizona tried something similar: Her [Governor Jane Hull’s] biggest mistake was signing the alternative fuels program pushed by House Speaker Jeff Groscost. This provided huge subsidies, averaging over $20,000, to cars equipped to run on alternative fuels--propane, natural gas, electricity. The law did not require motorists to use the alternative fuels, and soon car owners were installing small propane tanks in their SUVs and demanding huge rebates. The program was billed as costing $5 million, but over the fall the cost zoomed up to $500 million--one-tenth of the state budget. Hull called a special session of the state legislature in November 2000 and suggested the state would pay the rebates over five years; Attorney General Janet Napolitano argued that the rebates could be voided if the law were repealed in the same year it was passed. Eventually the law was repealed in December 2000, but the cost to the state has been huge.

Congress Exempts Itself From Public Plan

A handful of Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee proposed an amendment to the health care bill that would've required the President, Vice President, and all Members of Congress to automatically be enrolled in a public option if the legislation passes. Is anyone really surprised it didn't pass, because of a strict party line vote? From one of the amendment's key sponsors, Rep. Sue Myrick (N.C.):
This shows that the majority is more concerned with pushing through a bill for political gain than with considering how it will affect the American people...We’re taking away the choice of the American people with regard to their health care, and by not being allowed to even consider this amendment, we are telling the American people that the rules don’t apply to the people who make them. It isn’t right.

Obama's Aunt Still Living in Boston

The Boston Herald reports today that President Obama's “Auntie Zeituni” Onyango, 57, who has been charged for illegal immigration, is still living in South Boston:
Onyango, a computer programmer, was ordered to leave the country in 2004 after her request for political asylum from the violence in Africa was turned down. Instead, she stayed illegally and was revealed to be living in government-subsidized housing on Flaherty Way in Southie last October by The Times of London during the final stretch of Obama’s run for the White House.
Onyango has since been renting an apartment while she awaits her February 4, 2010 appeal to U.S. Immigration Court over her ordered deportation by the Department of Homeland Security. Onyango said she’s been enjoying her privacy since escaping the heat of last year’s worldwide spotlight on her and enjoys joining in on conversations about her nephew with people who don’t recognize her. “Boston is my second home,” she said. “(South Boston) is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever lived in. People are very kind, and I’m enjoying the beaches.”

The Right Isn't to Blame for the Birthers Making Headway
|

On Wednesday, I reported on the widely-hailed Mike Stark video, which falsely claimed that the "birther" conspiracy movement is influencing Republican members of Congress. I'd also point readers to the witty editorial by David Freddoso on liberal bloggers getting their knickers in a bunch over the now-disproven Michele Bachmann-birther ballyhoo. Now, Daily Kos releases a poll showing that nearly a third of Republicans have questions about Obama's citizenship. That's significant, and really surprises me.
"Once again, Republicans find themselves outside the American mainstream. And reality," writes Kos. Ben Stein even jumps on the bandwagon: "you can see why Republican politicians are inclined to treat it with some respect."
Poll numbers are poll numbers, but given the record, wouldn’t it be worth taking a second glance before assuming that even a fraction of the Republican political establishment pays deference to these cats? I wish I could travel back in time and see how many Democratic politicians would hesitate when asked how much attention they paid to the conspiracy theorists pushing the "Bush caused 9/11" junk. I doubt any would say they paid attention; none come to mind that actually did. And as The Economist points out, despite 39% of Democrats believing that 9/11 was a conspiracy in 2007, “there wasn't a corresponding rise in tolerance for 9/11 conspiracy theorists." Lo – I also don’t recall a massive right-wing blogger orgy claiming that all Dems were convinced Bush was the one blowing everything up.
You’ll always have people on both sides of the aisle who grab on to the craziest thing they can find and then milk it for all it’s worth. As the Kos poll proves, those numbers are even higher than some of us would expect. But with due respect to Stein (who is certainly one of my Gods in the politico-blogger world), you’re only going to get burned by perpetuating the belief that these crazies are making headway. And at least the birthers are only disputing one man's citizenship, rather than questioning the motive behind the slaughter of over 2,000 Americans.
